In so many areas of society, to be a man is to be treated as inherently guilty.
It is the side eye in the playground.
It is the quickened pace of others.
And the itchy trigger finger of police.
It is to be considered not innocent, but an ‘enemy combatant’ by default, when killed in a war zone.
It is to be considered second class parent by law, in family court.
It is to receive longer sentences, even when committing the same crime as a woman, in our judicial system, and it is to be punished more harshly for the same behavior in our schools.
Male, to many, is a synonym for ‘bad’.
So could this sense of inherent guilt be behind the way society sees gay men?
And might this too explain why it was so often gay men in particular, who were uniquely criminalised historically?
What do you think?
