I know that sometimes it can feel like progress seems slow. But, such things always seem ‘slow’ until they suddenly blow up into mass market acceptance, and we all left wondering how it happened so fast. It may not be today, tomorrow, or next week; but I am convinced that society cannot continue to ignore what is happening to men and boys for much longer. The silence has become a whisper, and a whisper a murmur… Now, the hushed voice is growing restless, and soon, we’ll hear such words spoken, soon to be shouted by full-throated advocates. Soon, we’ll look at the 4,500 British men who, in a last-ditch act of desperation, are driven to end their lives by suicide each year, and say, ‘no more’. Soon, we will refuse take a seat as our boys are failed by our educational system; we’ll stand, and say ‘no more’. Soon, the hundreds of thousands of abused men, left out in the cold, will be listened to, supported and helped, when the world says ‘no more’. Such things may seem impossible, but everything seemed impossible until it was done. The only question that remains is not if, but when will this happen? When will this coming of age begin, and from whom will it originate? Well, let’s take a look at the Diffusion of Innovation, one of the oldest social science theories in the world, used to predict when change might finally arrive.
