When it comes to the “mens health sector”, the latest talk of the town is discussion around “masculinity”, in its various different forms and flavors. Toxic, fragile, entitled, spiritual, oppressive, violent, and so on, and so forth. But does such discussion miss the wider picture? Why do so many obsess over dissecting problematic male behaviour, rather than confronting the often painful formative lived experiences, environments, and external stressors that shape them? Becuase it’s true that “hurt people, hurt people”; and so often, those who society roundly condemns, in many ways, are victims too in their own right. So is it time we stopped glaring at the angry man, and learnt to see the damaged boy that is so often hiding behind him?
