Discussion of domestic violence, especially around male victimisation, often leads us to the conversation of “context”. It’s a set of talking points that speaks of “power and control”, about “patriarchy”, “patterns of behavior”, “domestic terrorism”, “structural power” and of course, “self defense”. Various assumed social contexts, that typically aim to reduce men’s experience of abuse, particularly when at the hands of women, down to something trivial, inconsequential, cartoonish, and reactive. So what is the truth to these claims? Is men’s experiences of abuse so contextually different to that against women, that they are completely different issues?
