If there’s one place where men certainly do dominate – it’s dying early. Men after all, have higher mortality rates in every age category, and live shorter lives in every single one of the world’s countries. And yet the crisis of men’s health remains bemusing to some, and disinteresting to the rest. Another victim to the sneers and finger-wagging of the politically popular. When it comes to actually addressing “Mens Health”, nobody seems to care, and least of all our politicians, and that includes the ‘leader of the free world’. Biden, stood up last week at the State of the Union Address, regurgitated the familiar claim that ‘women’s health has always been underfunded’, and announced yet another initiative to address this. The newly fangled ‘White House Initiative on Women’s Health Research’. And no – 🚨 I am not against more funding going to women. 🚨 I am not against this new initiative joining several others like. I am glad to see women’s research taken seriously. But where is the funding for men’s health? For American men now lead in nine of the top ten causes of death, die at a rate 1.4 times higher than women, and have poorer health outcomes across every racial, ethnic and social economic group. Why do we so readily accept men’s early death as, “well, that’s the way it is”. Whilst women’s health is something the Government rightly fights for? So as the new White House Initiative for Women’s Health takes flight, will the bill to set up the first Office on Men’s Health receive the same Presidential approval, or public cheers of support? Could Bill H.R.4182, the Men’s Health Awareness and Improvement Act, be a time to legislate the actual gender equality we hear so regularly talked about?
