Women Of War

February 28, 2022

The erasure of history’s war waging women, of the Queens and rulers who were military geniuses and brave generals, is deeply inaccurate (some might even say misogynistic.)

The world is not black and white, and the truth is that in virtually every time in history, women have waged wars too.

Be in Boudica with her chariots pushing back the Roman Empire, Queen Elizabeth defeating the formidable Spanish Armada, or Saint Olga with her flaming birds, burning down the city of Iskorosten… women have waged war and been incredibly successful too.

So to those who think women are incapable of leading a military conflict or campaign, I invite you to go back in time and tell that to Catherine the Great – although prepare to return without your head. 🗡

Even in the modern day we have Maggie Thatcher, Indira Gandhi and Golda Meir, all powerful Prime Ministers, who went to war…. and were also women.

This idea that war is solely the practice of men is an affront to these powerful, cunning and independent women, who we can certainly disagree with politically – but we cannot deny their existence.
