No. Advocating for men and boys is not the same as advocating for white people, campaigning for ‘Able-Bodied Day’, or demanding a celebratory month for ‘Straight Pride’.
And I’m tired of gutless politicians, lazy journalists, and internet whinos pretending it is.
Let’s be clear…
Being a man is not the same as being white.
All you need to do is look at the facts.
White people do not have worse health outcomes, lower life expectancy, and higher mortality rates at every age.
White people do not lead in 13 of the top 15 causes of death in America.
White people are not falling behind at every stage of education, in virtually every single Western country.
White people do not make up nine in ten deaths of homeless people.
White people are not 20 times more likely to be killed by police, and do not constitute 95% of Americans who die at work.
White people are not ending their life by suicide, at rates three times higher than other demographics.
….but men and boys are.
So no, this is not like ‘All Lives Matter’, and people are silly to suggest it is.
In fact, it is the opposite – Men and Boys Advocacy is an essential tool to better understand what is going on with the male population; how they’ve been neglected, mischaracterised, and betrayed, and who’s doing it.
There are questions demanding answers, that most people are too cowardly to ask:
Why do we care less about men and boys?
Why do we ignore, or deny the issues they experience?
Why do we insist such a group are ubiquitously privileged?
Why do we call suicidal men ‘toxic’?
And might the hysterical, cultural fear that swirls around ‘men’ be feeding into the very issue of police brutality itself?
Many people don’t want to have these conversations, or ask these hard questions – because if they did, the accusatory finger will likely be pointed at themselves.
Yet, the deeper these people dig, the harder and more shameful it will become to climb out of the giant hole, when the inevitable admissions by their future selves become unavoidable…
Heroes to their own story… suddenly cast as the villain.
Don’t be one of those people.
