Suicide is an incredibly complex worldwide phenomenon that claims more lives than war, murder and natural disasters combined. It’s also an epidemic that claims more male lives in virtually every country in the world – and is now the single largest cause of early death in young men. And yet for such a tragic and devastatingly massive issue, male suicide has become the centre of political fighting, and hijacked by radical anti-male rhetoric, and nonsensical social justice jargon. Remember, ‘men’ are not a homogenous group. Similarly, male suicide cannot be chalked up to a singular cause, or a quippy hashtag. ’Toxic masculinity’, ‘male privilege’, and ‘patriarchy theory’ are the unwelcome guests to a discussion they were never invited to, and from which they will not leave. As we know, the study of male suicide needs to be apolitical and evidence based, rather than an ideological war ground. And those unable or unwilling to broaden such perspectives are simply not welcome to the conversation any longer. Such mindless rants take up all the oxygen; to distract, deny, and cause division where there needn’t be any. Male suicide should not be a controversial topic; we all want to save our men and boys. So it’s with great pride that I can announce Susie Bennett’s game changing meta synthesis has finally been published, by the world’s most respected psychological journal – The APA’s Psychological Bulletin. Let this be the first word in a more inclusive and far better conversation around male suicide. ~ READ IT FOR FREE Images by Gradienta, Codioful, Jason Leung, Kiwi Hug, Nartan Buyukuildiz from Unsplash.
