I for one am tired of the constant catastrophising of the liberal left. We have been, all of us, sat permanently in the brace position for years now; everything is f**ked, for everyone, everywhere, all the time. It’s exhausting. Nothing is good enough. Shit is going down left, right, and centre, and the world is ending in new and more profoundly excruciating ways. Silence is violence. Words are violence. The walls of acceptable behaviour are closing in, entombing us all onto a tight rope that doesn’t aim to make us better, it only tries to make us fall. Fall so others can laugh, and point, and feel good about themselves. Cry bullies, chirping on about ‘diversity’, but only diversity of gender, sexuality and race, and never of ideas, or opinion. Everything and everybody is institutionally racist. Misogyny is endemic, homophobia is rife; global society is falling apart, and dammit I’ve just burnt my toast. I do not mean to make light of these problems, I agree there is still important work to be done. But would it hurt anyone to acknowledge that our society, although imperfect; is the least racist, least sexist and least homophobic one to have ever existed? And if you don’t believe that’s true, can you at least accept that progress does not come from censoring any kind of dissenting opinion? We need to learn to welcome uncomfortable conversations, be willing to lay down upon the bed of nails, and bravely confront those with who we disagree. You cannot sanitise your life of the ideas you don’t like, as too much cleanliness will make you sick. And we are sick. We are sick, and we are weak. And we are sad. Something‘s changed – this is the era of the miserable liberal. Too many have become a bunch of spineless brats, cocooned within layers of bubble wrap, pasty, flabby and incapable; unwilling to fight with dignity, strength or grace. “YES WE CAN”, is long gone.
