In a world where inclusive, gender neutral language prevails; it blows my mind that we still class abused men as “women”.
Yup. You read that right.
If you’re a man being abused by your wife, or if you’re a boy with experiences of sexual assault, or stalking; you are officially classed as a woman (or a girl) by our own Government (and successive governments before that).
This is a Government who pretends to care about male victims; who says that we all matter, no matter the sex and no matter how few.
And yet, they’ll erase countless male victims within their own policy.
We have rightly adopted the term “police officers”, to recognise a minority of women who serve in the police.
We have adopted the term “fire fighter”, again, to give visibility to the heroic women in the fire service too.
And yet, the millions of men and boys being abused, who make up one third of all such people, are not only refused recognition, but can expect the opposite instead.
So don’t tell me “men need to speak up”, when our own Government are too cowardly to speak up for them.
And stop asking me “why do men not recognise abuse against them?” When our politicians fail to do the same.
This is a sick joke, except it’s not penned into an Orwell novel, it’s real, and it’s happening right now.
So, I’ll leave you with the words of legendary feminist Gloria Steinem: “to be it, you must see it”.
And I ask – where exactly are we seeing the male victims of abuse?
