Words are murky, misleading, and muddled; and can lead us to believe things that are not the complete truth. Within the world of gender equality, a new word that continues to be banded around office spaces, university campus, and Westminster alike, is “STEM”. #STEM is an acronym meaning “Science Technology Engineering and Maths”, and is usually followed by some claim to how few women are studying such fields. The go to number for such advocacy is “35%” and I agree, if that were the correct number, then more should be done to get women into these subjects. But... it’s not true. Because “STEM” hides a secret, in that it only includes certain specific subjects, and somehow excludes many others that really ought to be included. Biology, for example, as we know, is a core science subject, but somehow is not “STEM”. Medicine, similarly is rooted in science… but is not STEM.
