Billie Eilish is back in the news, with another gift of stupidity, having told the world that men do not receive negative comments about their body, because ‘women are nice’. Phew. Simple Thanks Billie, how wonderful to hear. Eilish asserts the same benevolently sexist caricature that all women are wonderful, virtuous and kind, and simply incapable of any sort of negatively, or wrong doing at all. And -of course- it’s men who are the problem, all the time, for everyone, in every single possible way. Meanwhile, the rest of us living in the real world are well aware that women can be cruel, just as cruel as men, and have contributed plenty to the toxic discourse around body image. Whether it’s height, penis size, hairlines, beards, or body size; men and boys are also the recipient of unattainable ideals of male beauty, and -yes Billie- women and girls do their bit in perpetuating them. Not only does such a problem exist, but it is growing. Over half of men show signs of body dysmorphia, and nearly one in four have received negative comments about their body online. More alarming is the fact that men and boys routinely undergo extremely painful, expensive, and usually ineffective procedures in a desperate attempt to fulfil these ideals, to stack a point or two onto their sexual market value – which almost always ends in disappointment. Billie’s ideas help nobody, least of all women, as I believe women have a front row seat to the horror show of beauty standards: they know better than anyone how cruel other women can be, and how stupid Billie’s words really are. So tell me, do women perpetuate body standards too? Is this yet another problem that is entirely perpetuated by men? Are women, just….
