Advocacy to end #malesuicide has finally begun, but whilst such a cause adorns the placards, podcasts, and social media feeds of so many, is it time to ask, are we looking in the right place?
And whilst the words of our mental health advocates are certainly welcome, are the voices of rich, impossibly good looking, economically powerful men really the voices we should be centring?
I’m not sure.
Because the most at risk group to suicide are not these man-banned men, selling books, slinging merch, and sitting in podcast studios…
The most at risk group to suicide is a middle aged working class construction worker, living in an industrial town in the north of England.
So where is that mans voice?
Here are the facts we never hear –
7,000 men have died by suicide in the UK construction industry in the past ten years alone.
Enough men to build four supermarkets, 150,000 affordable homes, 78 schools, 2 small hospitals, 200 apartment blocks and one high rise tower.
But more than this – the loss of these men leaves a far bigger hole in the hearts of friends, families and loved ones, right across the UK.
So, is it time we asked why do so many men in construction end their lives?
And does the Government, who are the biggest contractor of these men, have an obligation to do something about it?
What do you think?
