There are people that will have you believe the world is an endless battle between men and women. A gender war of catastrophic destruction; where a tyrannical oppressor class of men, dominate women for all of time. It’s certainly an exciting and seductive world view, but it is not necessarily the reality you will find before you. As men have always stood with women. For our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends; for generations, men and women have fought and marched alongside one another. You can see it right now in #Iran. A historic coming of age, for the country’s brave women and girls, who fight against cultural misogyny and win back their rights. But these heroic women are not doing this alone, and despite headlines of ‘a women’s led revolution’ we must not forget the men and boys who have tragically fought and died alongside them. The risks they take and sacrifices they make, must be remembered too. As these men will not receive the same applause, they won’t win any awards, or magazine cover images, or be written about in the same way by the press. In fact their sacrifices are often erased by our media, who seem to look straight through them, toward ‘women and children’. But they are there nonetheless. They’ve always been there. And we should never forget them. So to those who say ‘men have never stood up for women’, you need only to look to Iran to find the men who are doing just that.
