In 1970 women made up only 7% of STEM workers, in 1980 it was 13% and in 2021 it had doubled to 27%. For some this may not be enough, but it is still progress. Yes, the words “Women in STEM” are on the lips of so many education providers, policy writers, political leaders and advocates. But have you ever heard of HEAL? These are the fields of Health, Education, Administration and Literacy, where women dominate and men do not. Medicine, psychology, nursing, neuroscience, teaching, social work – were men continue to drop out, and women drop in. Men in HEAL has experienced the opposite trend of women In STEM, with men dropping from 33% of the HEAL work force in 1980, to 25% today. This is especially pronounced in education, where only 1 in 5 classrooms has a male teacher. For kindergarten, its virtually 0%. So why are we not talking about men in HEAL? Isn’t equality of opportunity something we should strive to achieve, for all sides? ~ Post inspired by Richard Reeves, of Boys and Men https://tinyurl.com/2xurkk7n End of Men, The Atlantic https://tinyurl.com/yjh9jbx2 Images by Flynn Doherty, Angela Litvin, Christina Wocintechchat, Element5 Digital, Phillippe Bout, Dan Cristian Padure, Nhia Moua, Gabriel Tovar, Zach Vessels, Ben Den Engelsen, Tom Potiger, Stephen Andrews, Michal Parzuchowski and JD Mason from Unsplash.
