Talking about men and boy’s issues, on the left, and outside of feminist frameworks is a wild, and often hostile place. As a leftie myself, this is of course a place that I call home. Sadly, all of the conversations I have on TheTinMen, in my view, are undeniably ‘left wing issues’, that so-called ‘progressives’ are simply too afraid to talk about. And so I watch as the left jettison their beliefs in equality… when it is equality for groups they don’t like. Meanwhile, over the years, I’ve seen so many on the right dominate these conversations of ‘men and boys issues’. So many conservative MPs calling for the political reform, legal changes and ministerial appointments, that I have been asking for. So many right wing newspapers, unafraid to write the headlines or print the articles, that unapologetically talk about what’s really happening to men. So many podcasts on the right, speaking positively about boys, men, masculinity and fathers. In my phone book are half a dozen well known right wing media channels, all keen to have me on their show, and yet, I’ve never been approached by such shows on the left. So whilst I have so much respect for the right in joining me here, it leaves me asking –where are the left? Why is it, that whenever I see Tory politicians bring bills to Westminster, that could save the lives of men, I always see a sea of empty seats for Labour? Worst of all, when men and boys punish these left wing parties in the voting booth, it’s never the left who examine themselves, to question how they could better reach these men. No. Instead, all too often, the male voter is called misogynistic, and ‘radicalised’, which couldn’t be further from the truth. So what even is ‘left wing’ anymore? Where are all our guardians or equality? And is the cavalry ever going to arrive?
