Traversing social media; to walk amongst the foot soldiers of outrage, and between the front lines of the culture wars, is a place where most of us feel completely lost.
Much like a puzzled grandad, randomly mashing the buttons of a modern television control he no longer knows how to use, I often feel this way too.
So –
Who the hell are alphas?
What on earth is a chad?
How do I update my list of man based insults?
To which crypto-bro should I send my credit card details?
And where and what, is this much discussed ‘Manosphere’?
Many people probably think I am some kind of high ranking Manosphere sergeant, but the truth is; I don’t know what you’re even talking about most of the time.
But I do know that I am bored of it.
I am bored of these lazily constructed words, and the cartoonish and bastardised portrayals of politics they present to us.
‘The Manosphere!’ 👻
Such eerie terms feel more appropriate scrawled onto the back pages of an overly imaginative child’s text book, who has too much time on their hands.
And the same goes for ‘The Patriarchy’.
Nebulas. Dogmatic. Subjective.
Spooky sounding and vaguely formulated political theories such as ‘the patriarchy’, would too find a better home whispered behind college bike sheds by skiving teenagers, rather than presented as a serious argument by grown ass adults.
So how did we arrive here?
Where did the grown ups go?
Why are we so obsessed with churning out neologism after neologism, each laden with shame, and each as meaningless and naive as those whose mouths they tumble from.
No.
These are not the words of progress or kindness, nor are they the tools of academia or science – they are the angry belches of propaganda, the war cries of trolls, and the whines of children.
Let’s look at ‘The Manosphere’, the word we all hear, but probably don’t understand.
So what is ‘The Manosphere’ to you; who is it, where is it, and what do they want?
