Men talking is good.
Men expressing pain and distress, discussing and disclosing traumatic experiences, or simply opening up, is a positive thing, for so many people.
But it is not a complete solution, nor can it be presented as the start and end of male suicide awareness.
For what use is talking, if the people men are talking to, aren’t really listening?
We are in this together.
And now is the time for all of us to discuss and act upon the things men are telling us.
Stories of abuse. Stories of childhood trauma.
Stories of abandonment or betrayal.
Stories of losing child custody.
Stories of financial distress and joblessness.
Stories of disability.
It’s time to accept that whilst ‘men talking’ is good, it will not fix the political, economic and structural problems that are shaping men’s distress.
The solution to those things are political and social action, and this action, among the kind words and niceties, is something men arn’t getting.
So is it time for men to talk, or is it time for us to listen, and to act?
How can male suicide awareness do better?
