The problem with normal life, is that it’s fucking boring. A man goes to work, does a good job, eats a sandwich and goes home – has no hope of making news headlines, or accruing tens of thousands of retweets and shares. Whilst if that same man, does something dramatic, violent or outlandish, it will be splashed across news headlines, and proliferated across the social media universe within minutes. And with this lopsided view of reality, we live our lives on the very extreme edge of society. A world of catastrophe, carnage, outrage, anger and violence – glued to your hands, addictive, and burnt into your retinas. But take a moment to look out the window, spend a few minutes observing the real world in all its mundane majesty… and you’ll see the two don’t quite line up. So how do we keep track of the real world, as our descent into this online oblivion becomes deeper, more real and more entrenched? How do we remind ourselves, that what we see in the palms of our hands, is just a tiny wedge of what’s out there? And similarly, is it also possible to judge people this way too? To see groups, be they men, women, feminists, MRAs, left or right, not by their worst, most highly visible and highly annoying members, but instead to judge each person as an individual first?
