We don’t grant men the same emotional depth as we do women. We see a woman in distress, dealing with mental health problems, or even acting in a criminal way and we rightly ask – What has happened to her? How did she arrive here? Who is she? We see this woman within the context of her environment and lived experience, as we should. But for men? No. He is inherently bad and we must start spouting the usual stupid slogans of: Toxic masculinity! Patriarchy! Male Fragility! Words that say nothing, offer nothing and that are clinically meaningless. We don’t ask these problematic men who they are, where they came from or what shaped their behaviour, and we certainly don’t see them as a victim in their own right. So I’d like to show you this in a real life example, using the results of an exciting study into mens violent fantasies. So let’s find out, what can a few well intended questions tell us about so-called “toxic” men? ~ More about the study here Images by Andres Perez, Elijah M Henderson, Tiago Bandeira, Kevin Laminto, Rene Bohmer, Yanal Tayyem and Rachel Crowe, from Unsplash. #menentalhealthawareness #bullying #mensmentalhealth #bullyingawareness
