Women are not a monolith. They are not one thing, but many. They are just individual people, like you or I am. They are our family, friends, colleagues, wives and girlfriends; our role models, heroes and teachers. Women are good. But so too women are flawed, just as men are. And yes they can do awful things too; capable of good or bad, greatness or evil, kindness or cruelty – it’s their choice, for that is what women’s autonomy truly means. As Margaret Atwood once put it – ‘My fundamental position is that women are human beings, with the full range of saintly and demonic behaviours this entails, including criminal ones. They're not angels, incapable of wrongdoing.’ I know some of us have painful histories. But none of this, no actions or experiences, no matter how painful the past, allows you to lump ‘women’ all together. As ‘men’ we know better than anyone what this kind of insolent group identity leads to – a mindless drubbing of obscene insults, arrogance, hate and division. To be called trash, pigs, oppressors, dogs, dominators, babysitters, predators, creeps, deadbeats or violent, for nothing but our gender. But we don’t do that here, we can be better. @thetinmen will always be pro women. Where we are all individuals first. So tell me, who are women to you?
