Empowered women make empowered choices. And sometimes they are choices you might not like. Sometimes women really don’t want to be an engineer, sometimes they might not like physics at all. Maybe they don’t actually like cars quite as much has men. Sometimes, heaven forbid, she may really want to be a stay at home mum. And that’s okay. Empowering women is to empower them to decide differently, if they so choose. Differently to you. Differently to me. Differently to men, and other women too. To be empowered is to decide who, how, what, why, when and where for themselves, and only by themselves. So it’s strange how this basic belief falls at the wayside when women’s choices are politically inconvenient, or socially unpopular, or out-of-lockstep with the latest en vogue agenda. If too many women end up in the healthcare, teaching, fashion, beauty or childcare roles, if too many girls do actually like pink, or too few choose to play football, then suddenly they must be brainwashed… or oppressed even. And there is goes. The glistening mantle of equality and free choice, replaced with yet more expectations. It goes without saying, that we all want women to be equal to men. But do we agree that they are the same? In fact, could these things even be diametrically opposed? Studies have begun to show that the more equal, the more empowered, and richer a society, the more its men and women become different, not the same. The more richness and colour in their plume tail, the more it looks kinda different to the others’. In simple terms, the more women choose, the more they choose differently. To remind us they are their own individual beings, not some kind of misshapen blob, to be hammered into the form of man. Women and men, in general, are different. And they show us this most, in the countries that allow them to do so.
