The emerging question of ‘what is it to be a man’, is too often answered by people who are… well… not men. Men, masculinity, boyhood, all of it, is a quietly gatekept conversation. A question too often politicised. Too often used to as a stick with which to hit men. And too often used as a grandstand for loud, obnoxious, self aggrandising grifters to exploit men. I am sorry, but if you are not a man, this is a chance for you to sit down, be quiet and listen. No. You are not a self appointed ‘authority’ on masculinity, you are a guest in this conversation, and nothing more.
