I do not bemoan stupid people; I’ve met my fair share, and grown to learn it is not their fault. I do however have an issue when other people pay the price of someone else’s stupidity. And when it comes to the ignorant idea that ‘men cannot be raped’, or ‘enjoy it’, that surely wins the top prize. I cannot believe it needs to be said, but men do not enjoy sexual assault anymore than women do. And no, neither is an erection some kind of giant thumbs up, or litmus test for consent. Trust me. Men get erections at the most annoying, inconvenient, or horrifyingly inappropriate times – and they only sometimes signal that we want to fuck. Such obviousness need not matter. The general consensus seems pretty clear – a woman cannot rape a man. Such nonsense is seen as true in the eyes of the public, the government, and even by law. Yes, that’s right, it’s still legally impossible for a woman to rape a man by U.K law, and we seem pretty comfortable in such an obscene arrangement. Naturally, such painful ignorance trickles down, erasing men and boys from needed support, and reframing them exclusively as predators themselves. But the facts present a different story, to what we are told to believe. One in six boys are sexually abused, and one in nine U.S. men are forced to penetrate in their lifetime; and unless it’s making tacky jokes, our trying to upstage another’s stupidity, we never seem to talk about it. So what can you learn from such blind ignorance?
