Bisexual men experience a unique type of biphobia, that sees them as cheaters, disease carriers, or as ‘secretly gay’. Much of this reveals itself within the dating market, where many of the women who are supportive of equality, free love, and bisexual men, suddenly refuse to date them. A kind of sexual nimbyism, so to speak. Two thirds of women would not date a bisexual man who has had sex with another man. More than four in five would not date a bisexual person altogether. Studies have found that such men are seen as less masculine, less sexually desirable, and less datable – even by bisexual women. Such studies remind us of what is clearly true, yet many refuse to admit – that the gender norms men experience are extraordinarily rigid, and are perpetuated and enforced by everyone, and yes, that includes women too. So amongst the marches, chants, and fervent placard waving of #pride, have we forgotten to talk about the unique experiences of bisexual men? Does the idea that bisexual men are ‘secretly gay’ just uphold the idea that, unlike women’s widely celebrated spectrum of sexuality, when it comes to men they are either gay, or heterosexual. Has the discussion of men’s sexuality been left behind? Are bisexual men forgotten about within the discussion of acceptance? And is “the work” being done by all of us?
