Recent surveys have revealed a deep ignorance toward male victims of sexual abuse. One in three would not believe a man who said he was r*ped by a woman. And even more shocking, one in four believe men ‘enjoyed’ being r*ped by women. Such myths can only exist in a world of naivity; that will not listen to such men, nor take seriously their lived experiences. They are the hidden stories we so rarely hear spoken about; the victims of not only sexual assault, but also a lack of compassion, awareness and support. Yes. The sad reality is that victimised men and boys are routinely spoken over, and for; laughed at, waved away, or ignored entirely. They are poked and prodded with lies, shame, and victim blaming rhetoric. Whilst crimes against them are written out of legislation, overlooked by Government intervention strategies, and ignored by the research. Their experiences are usually trivialised, and diminished, unfairly filed alongside far out freak accidents like getting killed by a meteorite, a shark attack, or being struck my lightening . So you needn’t worry. The narrative around men paints male victims as a tiny rounding error – but this is not an honest one. In fact, another survey of college men found 17%, nearly one in five, have been r*ped. The point is – male victims are not insignificant. Their experiences are not to be swept under the rug, or turned into the butt of crude jokes. They should not draw eye roles, scoffs, or dumb chortles of back slapping stupidity. They should not be ignored by research, academia, or the justice system. They are real, and deserve sympathy. And they deserve to be heard. So how do we finally listen to this maligned voice? How do we hear the stories of the male victim of sexual assault?
