The popular portrait of ‘incels’ is one painted by political hyperbole, media mischaracterisation, and the yells and cries of fanatical social justice warriors.

Close your eyes and think of an incel for one moment – he’s white, he’s far right, he’s male, he hates women, and he loves Andrew Tate.

It’s certainly a compelling antagonist for a Netflix series…

But the fine brush strokes of emerging research paint a more sophisticated picture: incels are typically from ethnic minorities, are usually centre left, have high prevalence of autism, do not like Andrew Tate, and are not always best seen through the lens of ‘misogyny’.

Despite what you’re hearing about them in Westminster, in schools, across social media, and plastered over the front pages of the media cycle, incels are a diverse group in terms of sexual orientation, race or ethnic background and religion, and far more complex than ‘they hate women’.

So, let’s hear what the experts have to say, namely William Costello, who has conducted cutting edge research with the largest sample of incels anywhere in the world…
