This pendulum represents the changing face of higher education across the developed world, over the last fifty years.
The speed of the pendulum, is proportionate to the speed of change.
The direction of travel represents the shifting representation of the sexes, away from men and toward women.
The angle to which the pendulum swings is proportionate to the gap between women and men gaining Bachelor’s degrees.
A timeline:
In America –
1972: Title IX was signed to promote gender equality in education, as women were 12 percentage points behind men.
1982: The gap is closed, the pendulum passes the mid point, and women and men are now equally represented… but the foot stayed on the gas.
2022: men are now further behind (18 percentage points), than women were in the early 70s (12 percentage points).
So the problem isn’t solved, it’s worse, but now inverted… yet we do nothing to help our young men and boys?
What do you think?
