When I was a child walking home at night, I would often talk loudly about “how great karate practice was”.
I puffed up my chest, and spoke confidentiality about how quickly I was learning from my lessons.
“I love it so much!”
But the secret was, there was no karate practice, I had never been and had no plans to.
I was just afraid to walk home at night.
Now, as a fully grown man who is 6’2 and weighs about 185 lbs, I *still* get afraid walking at night.
I walk in the middle of roads to avoid blind spots, I keep my distance, I maintain a brisk and confident pace and watch the shadows cast by street lights above, to see if there’s anyone behind me.
As men we are no less human than anyone else, and no less able to feel fear.
In fact, walking through South London the other night, stupidly wearing headphones, I saw something in the corner of my eye, I turned round and a young woman was there – I literally jumped back and screamed.
So yes, we get scared too – so guys, what do you do about it?
