To this day, every young man in America on his 18th birthday has to sign up for the military draft, giving his life to his country.
Failing to register can lead to men’s ineligibility to hold a Government job, the inability to get a student loan, in some states the inability to hold a driving license and can even lead to a loss of citizenship for immigrants.
Whilst knowing and willing refusal to register for the draft can be punished by up to 5 years in federal prison and a fine of 250,000 dollars.
Of course, if you have money and power you can avoid the draft, as many male politicians did; such as Bill Clinton, Dick Cheney, Donald Trump and George W Bush.
However, even the most influential Black men were not afforded this way out – not even the greatest boxer of all time #mohammedali
