As unpopular as it might be – before some men became violent, many were victims too. Victims of abuse, neglect, addiction, poverty and mental illness
So does our criminal system need reform? To fundamentally shift the way we see inmates away from villains who are deserving of punishment, and toward the rehabilitative and compassionate Nordic view, that sees many prisoners as those in need of help?
A lot of progress has been made to bring this approach to women’s prisons, but very little – if any – has been made for men, despite them being the vast majority of the prison population.
